Director's Statement
From pain comes comedy...someone once said that, I think.
I doubt I just did. But it is apropos for "I Do & I Don't" - a
comedy about marriage spawned from my divorce.
Years after that failed first marriage, when
the bitterness finally faded, I set out to write a film that tackled all of my
issues with the institution of marriage. Through all that happened to me back
then, I found that the best time on which to focus was the pre-marital
counseling required by the church in which we were to marry.
The title "I Do & I Don't"
comes from the wedding scenes at the altar which bookend the film. On the spot,
Bob & Cheryl make up their own vows in a last-ditch effort to get married
on their own terms - not those of her church or family - and reveal their
reservations about spending the rest of their lives together.
The film is about people realizing that
marriage is not perfect - that it does come with caveats, but ultimately if two
people really want to be together, they'll make it happen.
It
is not a mockery of marriage, but rather a funny and honest look at what many
people are thinking, but very few say.
